What is a Paramedic?
A Paramedic, also known as a EMT-P, is roughly a two year course of classroom learning, hospital clinicals, and EMS clinicals that allow the student to certify as a Paramedic.  Once certified and approved by their medical director, the Paramedic can perform advanced prehospital life saving skills such as endotracheal intubation, cardiac defibrillation, cardioversion, initiate IV lines, administer medications, and many more life saving skills.  Read more about EMT-Paramedics

What is required to be a Paramedic?
You may download an entrance testing application from our Upcoming classes page.  A short summary includes: current certification as an EMT-Basic in Kentucky, age of 18 years or older, a current valid Kentucky driver's license, and no criminal convictions. You may also read more at the Kentucky Board of EMS website

Are there any prerequisites for the course?
Yes. See the above.

When will the class meet?
The course is arranged on a M/Tu/every other Fri; We/Th schedule A schedule will be available the first night of class. See the Paramedic 2010 class schedule for an example. The class times are 6-10PM, but the ACLS and PALS will be scheduled on two weekends. A complete schedule will be distributed in class.  We will be starting our pre-course Anatomy & Physiology class December 7th.

Where will the classes be held?
Pleasure Ridge Park Training Station in Louisville, KY. Map to PRP Training Station

I am not a EMT, I am a.... Can I attend?
No.  Kentucky requires Paramedic students to be currently certified EMT-Basics.

How do I apply?
You may download an entrance testing application from our Upcoming classes page.   The Entry process is as follows:
1. Download and complete the 2011 Application, and return with all supporting documents.  You will also submit the Background check to the Kentucky State Police.
2. All candidates will be emailed the link for the online entrance test after their application is processed.  You may also visit EMT Paramedic 2011 Entrance Exam FAQ about the test if you wish to learn more about the test.
3. Complete the online entrance exam in one sitting, at a time convenient to you.
4. You will be contacted for an interview appointment, to be conducted at Rural/Metro.
5. After all interviews are completed, the Instructors will meet to select the members of the class and the alternates.
6. Selected students and alternates will be notified and arrangements made for class deposits.

What books will I need?
Know How will provide you all of the required class texts.  We will be using  Bledsoe's  Paramedic Care: Principles and Practices 3rd Edition as our main class text.  Workbooks, and supplemental books can be used by the students, but are not provided as a part of the class tuition.  Your anatomy material will be issued the first night of class, and the class text will be issued at the completion of the Anatomy & Physiology portion.

Are there tests?
Oh, yes. Your class coordinator will go through the various class policies regarding testing and scoring when the class begins.

What format will the tests take?
Usually multiple choice test questions, or short answer. However, instructors are free to use whatever testing format they feel best reinforces the material.

Do I have to keep a minimum score?
Yes.  Minimum passing score and scoring methods will be covered in the first class.  Grades will be posted on the website student portal.  Breakpoints are Tests #4, 7, 9, and 13.  Those not meeting the minimum passing score will meet with the instructors and may be asked to leave the class.  Refunds are not issued.

How hard will it be?
This course is a major investment of time, money and work.  No one will breeze through the class.  However, good study habits and persistence goes a long way to mastering the skills required to be a paramedic.   You will be reading nearly all of your text prior to course completion. It is highly recommended that you read all associated material prior to the class session. This will enhance your learning and make the class easier. Very little class time will be dedicated to reviewing and covering material that has already been presented.

Is Internet access required?
Yes. Test scores, supplemental educational material and information, class notices, and other info will be posted on KHI’s website periodically throughout the course. Broadband is strongly suggested.

What is the cost?
$3300, which includes the core class texts, including the full 5 volume set of Bledsoe's Paramedic Practice.   Tuition also includes ACLS and PALS fees, manuals, Anatomy workbook, EKG practice workbook, and class materials.  The payment schedule has been revised for the upcoming class and breaks down as follows:

  1. A deposit of $300 is due on acceptance into the class.
  2. A payment of $700 is due on the first day of class.
  3. A payment of $1150 is due at the conclusion of the Anatomy & Physiology section.
  4. A payment of $1150 is due at Test #4

A discount of $300 is given to those paying tuition in full on the first day of class (total tuition cost $3000).  Those with extenuating circumstances may contact KHI to discuss alternate payment terms.

There is a $25 fee for the entrance examination and interview. This testing fee is non-refundable.

Aiieee!  I want to attend the course, but do not have the cash!
Know How has made contact with Kentucky Telco Federal Credit Union about signature loans for the amount of tuition.  Call (502)459-3000 and ask about applying for membership and to obtain a signature loan for the tuition.  As of this writing, the loan would be paid back over 3 years.  We are not able to accept custom payment plans, which is why we have made arrangements with KentuckyTelco.

There are also several EMS scholarships that are available to students: Brian Jennemann Scholarship or go to  Community Foundation of Louisville.   The deadline for this scholarship is July 15th, so we suggest you apply now if you are interested in this class. You may also check out Bound Tree Medical's Scholarship page. Also look into the Big Shears Scholarship.
At this time, we do not offer the GI Education Bill program.

I had registered for the class, and I just found out I cannot attend.. Can I get a refund?
Unfortunately, your $300 class deposit is not refundable.  You may drop out of the class prior to the completion of the Anatomy & Pathophysiology and not owe any additional tuition.  Students continuing past that point will be liable for the full tuition.

What if the class is full?
We will start an alternate list, in case original applicants cannot attend the class.  Alternates may be notified even as late as the day the class starts, so be sure the contact information is accurate on your application.  Deposits will not be required of alternates, but payment is expected as described above

What about absences?
We understand ‘life happens’. But, due the tremendous amount of material covered, limited absences can be permitted.  Students will still be held responsible for all material covered, and generally, the material is only covered once. Your course coordinator will explain more about the absence policy on the first day of class.

Can I smoke or eat/drink in class?
No.

What immunizations are required?
You MUST have the following immunizations and PROOF of the immunizations: Hepatitis B, TB test, MMR, DPT, and varicella (proof of prior chickenpox is OK).  This is required for hospital clinicals.  Proof must be supplied by the end of the Anatomy and Physiology section. If you have not already had the Hepatitis B series, you should start immediately since it is given over several months. You should bring proof of immunization to the first night of class.

Can I be on call on a class night?
If you face this, you should talk to your class instructor in advance.  As long as you can make your call non-disruptive to the class, taking call may be possible, but frequent call and/or absences will be a problem.
