Emergency
Department Technician
The role of the ED
Technician is vital to the operation of Emergency Departments across the nation.
The ED-T course will introduce you to many of the skills and knowledge necessary
to perform as an ED Technician. Although there is significant variation in the
duties of technicians depending on the particular hospital, our course addresses
a set of core skills. Emphasis will be placed on common duties such as
splinting, taking vital signs, and patient care. Many EDs are dependent on
their ED Techs for a myriad of duties. Although all ED Techs are traditionally
trained on-the-job, many would benefit from preparation academically for a role
in the ED. The ED-T course also exposes current ED Techs to a variety of
material which will be useful on a day-to-day basis, such as splinting, wound
care, and patient care topics.
Know How has carefully considered the ED-T course goals in regard to other training programs such as EMT, LPN, Paramedic, and RN. All of these programs have strict guidelines and criteria which define a successful completion of the training programs. However, ED Technicians have no such criteria, much less a standardized curricula. Given the many roles of an ED Tech, there are significant differences in duties between EDs. This is one of the many things preventing a truly standardized curriculum. For successful course completion, participants will be required to pass a written test of basic ED Technician skills and demonstrate satisfactory performance of basic skills in the lab portion of the exam.
